NHSOA Officials Participate in National Wheelchair ChampionshipsThe National Wheelchair Basketball Championships were held last week in Louisville, KY. Three NHSOA officials were among the 39 officials invited to participate in an event with nearly 90 teams and 1,000 highly inspirational athletes. The officials are Tony Frescas (Bennington), Cory Piercy (Fremont), and Gary Piercy (Omaha). The three Nebraska officials each worked 10-12 games over three days, and were among the 21 officials selected (by a vote of the NWBOA board) to work the finals in the 7 divisions contested there. However, the most impactful assignment was having a chance to volunteer time to work with disabled military veterans who were attending a clinic to learn the game. ![]() Officials
On behalf of the Nebraska High School Officials Association (NHSOA) and myself, we would like to share our excitement on the future of high school officiating in Nebraska. The NHSOA started out serving football and basketball officials. In 2013 the NHSOA expanded our platform to include volleyball, swimming and diving, soccer, track and field, softball, baseball, and wrestling. Accountability of officiating in all sports contests has been heightened by the introduction of social speak, sportsmanship initiatives, public and media criticism. As such, we believe officials must maintain a high level of competency, and we must be accountable to rule application, mechanics, calls, performance and our behavior. Our purpose as the Board of your official’s association is to organize Nebraska athletic officials into a cohesive, statewide association that encourages excellence in all sports, emphasizes sportsmanship, fair play and integrity at all levels. We are committed to statewide educational outreaches/clinics, increased evaluations, as well as, providing services and support for the benefit of membership. It is important for you to know that although the NHSOA is endorsed as the officials’ organization in partnership with the NSAA, this Association will be directed and administrated by officials. This Association will serve as the voice for Nebraska officials. Statewide high school official’s organizations aren’t new and we feel that Nebraska officials deserve an association that acts in their best interest. You will be receiving correspondence from your sport specific chair in the near future. I want to give you a snap shot of the benefits you will receive as a member of the NHSOA. * Belong to an association governed by officials from across the state, with equal representation of each sport, working together to attain one common goal *Attend NSAA sanctioned clinics/camps free of charge *Be recognized with years of service milestones *Have the opportunity to utilize HUDL for self-evaluation, growth, training, and educational purposes *Be a part of a statewide mentoring program *Participate in a quarterly newsletter NHSOA Board Members: NHSOA Director - Kelly Classen, Spencer Baseball – Gary Eickmeier, Dodge Basketball – Scott Johnson, McCook Football – Shane Smith, Lincoln Soccer – Doug Epps, La Vista Softball – Renee Williams, Lincoln Swimming and Diving – Scot Sorensen, Waterloo Track and Field – Doug Kubik, Atkinson Volleyball – Sue Mailhot, Bellevue Wrestling – Todd Parr, Gibbon, Secretary We began with 300 plus officials for football and basketball and I need to thank you all for your commitment and support to the bigger picture of professionalism and education with officiating.
